MoneyGuidePro (MGP)

Set-Up Instructions:

We strongly recommend going through the 15-minute Ascent course, “MoneyGuidePro Integration Checkpoint” under the Integrations Trail so you can learn how to utilize all the features this integration has to offer in Orion.  The course provides visual instructions and guidance invaluable to the setup.

After going through this course if you have additional questions, let us know.  Follow the steps below to link your households up to MGP.

How to link Orion portfolios to MGP:

To launch the MGP integration, start in Orion Connect.  You have the option to initiate the launch in either the Household Overview app or Portfolio Audit app.

(If you choose Portfolio Audit, you will need to click on a client household record for the "Links" drop-down button to appear in the top right corner, and from the drop-down, select MoneyGuidePro.)

This will send all active accounts with a value within the household to link them to the client's MoneyGuidePro plan(s) and give you the choice of which accounts to link. If no MGP client is found, you can manually find and link it, or create a new one. Each Orion account must be linked individually.

If this is the first time you are linking a client to MGP, you will be prompted to sign into MoneyGuidePro with your MGP advisor license credentials.

(Office Manager and Assistant licenses do not integrate)

After the first time, it will associate you with your Rep ID in Orion and not prompt you for MGP login info again.  If you would like to see the MGP instances within the Client Portal, Insight app or Report Builder sub-reports, you will need to match each household individually.  Once you go through this process once, it will dynamically update information in both platforms periodically throughout the day.

Please note: If you launch the client and you already have the investment assets listed in the plan either entered manually or pulled from another integration, they will be duplicated.  If you choose not to map any accounts from Orion to MGP (send Orion data to MGP), you will still be able to pull plan information from MGP into the Client Portal, Insights App, and sub-reports in Orion.

MGP FAQ:

Q: Once I establish the MoneyGuidePro integration, will all households be linked to MoneyGuidePro?

A: No.  The MoneyGuidePro Orion Integration is a one-to-one relationship.  This means each household must be linked to a MoneyGuidePro client record in order for the integration points to appear in both MoneyGuidePro and Orion.

Q: Why can’t I search for the preexisting plan in MoneyGuidePro when launching the Orion integration from Portfolio Audit?  It asks me to create a new client.

A: MoneyGuidePro looks for the client in their system based on the client's name.  Check to see that the client's name is correct in the Profile section of MGP.  If the name is correct, make sure you or the advisor launching the client from Orion is the same person who made the plan in MoneyGuidePro.

Q: Where can I find my MoneyGuidePro Institution ID?

A: This number can be found on the Partner Options page under User Options.  User Options is the first option under the Admin column on the MoneyGuidePro welcome screen.  The ID will be next to: "For the purposes of launching MoneyGuidePro from an integrated partner, your institution ID is: 123."

Q: When I launch a client from Orion, the MoneyGuidePro screen says "Welcome Advisor X."  Advisor X is not me.  How is this happening?  Can I change it?

A: Orion sends the MGP Institution ID and Rep Number to refresh the connection.  In Orion, Connect navigate to Portfolio Audit, right-click the household and choose "Edit Household" from the drop-down. The pop-up window will display the Rep associated with the household. Authorized users are able to change the household’s Rep in this window.

Q: What fields in Orion are used to map the Orion accounts in MoneyGuidePro?

A: The account’s custodian, Registration Code, and account value as of yesterday’s market close.

Q: Are there additional steps after I launch the client household from MoneyGuidePro in order to complete the integration?

A: The account mapping page will be displayed after you launch the client household from Orion for the first time.  On the account mapping page, you will confirm the account type and account owner (and joint owner if applicable) for each account sent from Orion.

Q: Can I integrate a household without a client record in MoneyGuidePro?

A: Absolutely.  This is considered Orion's recommended integration best practice when using MoneyGuidePro.  Once you launch the household, MoneyGuidePro will prompt you with "You have submitted a new client from Orion that is not currently linked to a client in MoneyGuidePro."  Without a preexisting client record in MoneyGuidePro, the Add button would be the best option.

Q: I keep receiving a Bad Request error when accessing the MGP planning tabs in the Orion client portal.  Why is this?

A: The integration may not be set up yet or the plan is incomplete.  You may choose to enable these tabs per client in the client portal under settings.

Q: After I launch the integration, I receive the following error message, “Access Denied.”  What is causing this?

A: More than likely it’s because the HH was already linked by another advisor license user with MGP.  Contact your MGP support team for how to troubleshoot.

Q: Is there a way to integrate without overwriting the preexisting personal information on my client’s plan?

A: Yes.  There is a partner option in MGP in the same area as the Institution ID that reads: Only use Orion portal integration without pulling data from Orion. This will need to be toggled to “Yes.”

Q: My client’s plan is linked to Orion, but the accounts and values aren’t syncing into MGP. What do I do?

A: There are a few possibilities that could be causing this issue:

  1. You could have an incorrect license type to make any changes to the plan or create the link in MoneyGuidePro.
  2. The client plan was created/is owned by a different user at your firm. Only the owner of the plan can link it to Orion.
  3. The MGP Partner Options are set to either disallow the Orion integration or disable importing accounts from Orion. The setting “Only use Orion portal integration without pulling data from Orion” needs to be set to “No” in order for accounts to sync to MoneyGuidePro.
  4. The Rep Number on the Household in Orion is assigned to another user in MoneyGuidePro.

Q: Orion is overwriting the names of my clients in MoneyGuidePro.  How do I stop this?

A: There is a setting in MoneyGuidePro's system that will prevent this.  Go to the main page on MoneyGuidePro, then go to User Options > Partner Options and update the Prevent the updating of client's personal information when importing data from Integration Partners option from No to Yes.
